Asphalt shingle roofs are a piece of Americana as old and as relevant as the Model T, baseball, and rock n’roll.
It is a classic example of American architecture and American-designed luxury. This type of roofing has been the industry’s favorite for generations.
What’s the point? What is it made of?
We’re here to help you, friend.
The Shingles
Asphalt shingles can contain as little as five percent asphalt and as much to 35 percent cementitious fillers, despite their name. Here’s the catch: Asphalt shingles come with three main options:
- Strip Shingles
- Dimensional Shingles
- Luxurious (Laminate Shingles)
Asphalt shingles are durable and malleable, making them versatile. Manufacturers can also custom-tailor shingles for specific environments. Some common treatments include hail protection, algae resistance, and enhanced reflective cooling colors.
The Underlayment
You won’t see the underlayment of your roof unless there is a serious problem.
This is the water-resistant material that’s installed directly on the roof deck. It’s your best line of defense against wind, severe weather, and humidity. This security layer works with your shingles to provide protection for your bones.
This layer is usually made from asphalt-saturated feel, non-bitumen synthesized, or rubberized asphalt.
Water and Ice Barriers
This barrier acts as a high-tech top sheet between your underlayment, shingles, and shingles. It protects against wind-driven rainfall and ice dams. Additionally, the barrier has a slip-resistant surface for roofers to use during installation. This will allow them to ensure that the barrier is waterproof against nail punctures.
Ridge Shingles and Hip
The final stamp on your home’s shingles is the hip and ridge, which are a roofer’s signature. They are installed at the top of your home and join two slopes to provide weatherproof protection.
The hip and ridge are available in many thicknesses, shapes, and colors. They can add a bold, stylish touch to your roof.
Ventilation Systems
The ventilation system removes obnoxious air from your attic.
This system removes moisture, stale, and heat from your attic which could otherwise become a breeding ground of mold and mildew. Proper ventilation helps to keep your home well-insulated and reduces energy consumption. It also provides foundational security.
Florida has three main types.
- Ridge: These are at the top of your roof.
- Static: Horizontal vent openings, or vent-covered holes.
- Gable: The Gable is a ventilation system that is installed at the end of the attic. It may also be connected to other systems.
Starter Strip
Remember the beginning, when we said From shingles to starter strips? Here we are, the starter strip.
The essential element protects your home’s eaves and rake edges during installation. It will be available in rectangular shingles to match all types of shingles. The starter strip will likely be gray as the other shingles will fully cover it.
